It’s sooo haaaaarrrrdddd to say goodbye… to furniture!!

A classic Boyz II Men song comes to mind every time I sell a piece that I’ve painstakingly refinished. Dramatic? Yep, sure am, but justifiably so… I happily put my blood (albeit only a splinter’s worth so far, knock on wood), sweat, and tears into every piece that I work on. pencil_beforeA piece of me goes into each piece, if that makes any sense, hehe. In fact, if I had it my way, I wouldn’t sell my most recent work… I would have a lovely circular foyer where this beautiful table would rest right smack in the middle of, properly dressed with a vase of fresh flowers on top along with a gorgeous rug and my little guys’ shoes strewn about underneath. But, alas, I do not have a foyer (pronounce it the hoighty toighty way while reading, please), so therefore this beauty is up on the auction block. *insert sad face here* Though it does turn my frown upside down when someone falls in love with my refinished pieces and gives them a happy home!  Here’s hoping this table finds a new owner before I swoon any harder!

W O R K

This beauty was a wobbly, dinged up, sad-lookin’ wooden doorstop when we met, but I bathed her in 4 coats of Miss Mustard Seed’s ‘Typewriter’ milk paint (adding bonding agent in the first two coats) & topped her off with some clear Briwax. The end result is a super cool finish that looks exactly like it was sculpted from a huge block of no. 2 pencil lead & I ADORE it! But, no! I cannot fall in love!! I am selling it since I don’t have a foyer… maybe I should just move so I can keep it! ;)

Santa’s gone & didn’t hire me on as Elf in Chief

Hey there, y’all! I’ve been taking a looooooong hiatus on my Furniture Refinishin’ since my boys have been on so many breaks at school… it has been a blast playing online, rockin’ out on video games, and ridin’ scooters all day, but I feel incredibly guilty about not working more! Actually, not sure if it’s guilt or just missing refinishing pieces! I love what I do! I will never get rich doing it or ever become Elf in Chief in Santa’s workshop (my little guys’ dream job for me), but I’m ok with that! I enjoy being a humble Carpentress & I hope 2015 is full of splinters and paint-soiled jeans for me! Reminds me, here’s a snippet of what I’m currently workin’ on… a not-even-close-to-being-done console/desk + an ‘upholster me, please’ Danish Modern chair! ;D

Add Character To Furniture With A Vintage Map

stella_decoA while back I refinished the gorgeous little French Provincial table seen here, but thought that it lacked something… I didn’t know exactly what until I came across a vintage map of London at a thrift store & light bulbs lit up above my head! What better map for a piece with French styling?! So, I decoupaged the map, glued some simple chain around the edge to give it a finished look, and voila! Easy peasy!

I think Stella is now complete!

Is there anything you wanna stick a map on?!

Baker Buffet Refinished into a Modern Media Cabinet

baker_3_somb.jpg

baker_2Hi there! Happy Easter to y’all! I’ve been busy this holiday weekend workin’ on a beautiful ‘Baker Furniture’ buffet! The construction of Baker pieces is impeccably & beautifully crafted, but unfortunately the veneer was chipping off of the drawer fronts. That fact made my decision to paint them an easy one. I flaked off any veneer that wasn’t attached, filled the gaps with wood filler, sanded, then painted with Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in ‘Artissimo’ followed up with a coat of hemp oil. It’s a gorgeous shade of neutral navy blue and my current favorite hue!

baker_workI see this piece being used as a media cabinet. I even thought about getting an HDMI wireless HD receiver so that I could hide our DVR inside & keep this beauty for myself, hehe! See, with an adapter that allows your remote to chat with your components behind doors their is no need to remove drawers for media components… you can keep all your tech out of sight which makes this furniture-lover over the moon!!

Hope this Baker beauty finds a happy home! ;D

Campaign Lingerie Chest Concept Sketch

I have to laugh about my incessant need to always take the hard way while tackling perfectionism along the way, lol! I was recently given a ginormous armoire with brass hardware that reminds me of campaign pieces, but instead of taking the easy way and slappin’ a coat of paint on it, I’m thinkin’ an upcycle into a more modern & functional piece is in order. The veneer on this piece is pretty beat up, the door handles are broken, and it has a speckle finish that needs to be stripped off. I’m also toying with the idea of planing the drawer fronts on the left to square them up since they are a bit wonky & then build a tall Lingerie Dresser to house them. Sounds easy enough, right?! Here’s my mint green and brass concept sketch for this piece to give me motivation to build…

Have you upcycled any pieces recently?

Me and Pauline… A Hutch Refinished in Milk Paint

hutch_hugPauline was a dream to work on! When I first laid eyes on this hutch, it reminded me of the one that my NaNa had… I lovingly gazed upon it as a little girl & perhaps it was the very piece that started my obsession with furniture and design. Needless to say, it was love at first sight with me and Pauline! I agonized for weeks as to what color she would become… I usually try to save wood, but some of this piece was molded plastic made to look like wood, I’m guessing from the 1960’s, so painting her was an easy decision. I hadn’t used milk paint in a long time & was longing to do some refinishing indoors… milk paint fit the bill since it’s nontoxic, safe to use around my little guys, no respirator required! I came across Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in ‘Artissimo’ and swooned! The rich navy is just what Pauline needed! I applied a coat of ‘Artissimo’ along with hemp oil, then I wanted to add some depth & chippiness, so along came ‘Trophy’ milk paint. WARNING! Applying a generous amount of hemp oil will induce extreme chippiness & this is exactly what I wanted! I couldn’t decide the amount of chip I wanted on Pauline, so I made the conscious decision to graduate the chippiness… solid ‘Artissimo’ on top, then a touch of ‘Trophy’ in the middle, fading down to extreme ‘Trophy’ chippiness on the bottom. I get to have my cake and eat it too, hehe!! :P

Pauline was still missing something… since her back was particle board, I wanted to paint that as well… it was a showdown between gray, mustard, and mint. This is where my adorable 5 year-old little guy comes in. I asked him to pick a color to which he replied, “Well, gray is borin’ and mustard is like baby poop, so I say mint!” Who could argue with that?! I think the pale mint really sets this piece off, allowing the contents to pop! I still need to rewire the hutch’s lighting and I’d love to find some mirrored picture frames, but for now, I’m content with this piece. Is a bedroom hutch for everyone? Absolutely not! But, for this furniture-lovin’ Momma who never gets to wear her fancy-pants shoes, it is sublime!!

Picked A Pigment For Pauline

So excited about the color choice that I FINALLY decided on for this gorgeous French Provincial hutch! Pauline will be bathed in ‘Artissimo’ by Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint! Now I just need to decide how chippy I want the finish… decisions, decisions, hehe! I can’t wait to start paintin’! ;)

Peggy_before_croppedDo you have any painting plans in the near future?

Mersman in Mint

Happy Wordless Wednesday to y’all! :D

minty_mersman_table_somb

I came across this beautiful little Mersman table recently & since I’m a tad obsessed with mint at the moment, I picked up a brush and painted away!! I also distressed, waxed, primed, and polyed, of course, hehe! The bad news is there are no before pics on this one since I’ve been crazy busy deckin’ the halls, but the good news is that this very table is being GIVEN AWAY soon! Keep an eye on my blog for details & happy holidays to you!!!

A Table Named Fran

I don’t know why I get so attached to furniture… I just get a feeling from some pieces, an urge to bring them back to their former glory or to create a more modern story with their timeless beauty. Guess I’m just a romantic at heart! This piece gave me that feeling and more even before I painted, distressed, and waxed it!!

fran_work

As I worked, it reminded me of my Great Aunt Fran, classy and beautiful. That description could also hold true for my Mother, which is why I’m beyond happy that this piece is going to her! Hope you enjoy it, Mom! :)))

Wordless Wednesday – Happy Clients Make Me Happy

It is bittersweet to work like crazy on a piece, to put your heart and soul into it… from imagining a concept, to painting it, to sweating in the heat to buff out a waxy glow, to then finally selling it to someone that you hope will appreciate the work that went into it. I have found that perfect bliss by selling my pieces on Etsy and am happy beyond words that the pieces I have passionately refinished find happy new homes through my humble Etsy Shop! On this wordless Wednesday I am grateful for happy clients because they make the furniture refinishing process a joy!!! :D

Here is my most recent piece that sold on Etsy from which I’m still glowing because of the lovely feedback the buyer gave my shop! I <3 happy clients!!
