Baker Buffet Refinished into a Modern Media Cabinet

baker_3_somb.jpg

baker_2Hi there! Happy Easter to y’all! I’ve been busy this holiday weekend workin’ on a beautiful ‘Baker Furniture’ buffet! The construction of Baker pieces is impeccably & beautifully crafted, but unfortunately the veneer was chipping off of the drawer fronts. That fact made my decision to paint them an easy one. I flaked off any veneer that wasn’t attached, filled the gaps with wood filler, sanded, then painted with Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in ‘Artissimo’ followed up with a coat of hemp oil. It’s a gorgeous shade of neutral navy blue and my current favorite hue!

baker_workI see this piece being used as a media cabinet. I even thought about getting an HDMI wireless HD receiver so that I could hide our DVR inside & keep this beauty for myself, hehe! See, with an adapter that allows your remote to chat with your components behind doors their is no need to remove drawers for media components… you can keep all your tech out of sight which makes this furniture-lover over the moon!!

Hope this Baker beauty finds a happy home! ;D

Stella… A French Provincial Table Refinish

stella_before_after
Meet Stella. A French Provincial antique table in need of a fresh start. When I spotted her I noticed her gorgeous bones, which happens to be my only prerequisite for refinishing a piece. I happily lugged her home and got to work. Her top was water damaged and dull, so the first thing I did was strip and sand it down to bare veneer. She was looking better already!

Next up was to apply some fresh lacquer in order to protect it from future damages. Three coats of lacquer and a single cot of wax make for an incredible feel and richness to the wood. After finishing her top it was time to give her base a new paint job. A warm antique white matched her stunning wood grain perfectly. For this piece I whipped up some homemade chalk paint and applied two thick coats, achieving an authentic aged look. When using chalk paint, a layer of furniture wax must be applied in order to seal the dried paint. For this piece I distressed while applying the wax, using 0000 steel wool and an old t-shirt to work the wax into the paint. Twenty minutes after applying the wax I buffed it out, creating an incredibly soft sheen that is comparable to no other furniture finish.

The bottom shelf remains half-finished for now… I have something brilliant in store for this French Provincial beauty! Stay tuned! ;Dstella_final

Update : Check out this post about how I added character to this piece by decoupaging a vintage map of London to it’s shelf!!

A Table Named Fran

I don’t know why I get so attached to furniture… I just get a feeling from some pieces, an urge to bring them back to their former glory or to create a more modern story with their timeless beauty. Guess I’m just a romantic at heart! This piece gave me that feeling and more even before I painted, distressed, and waxed it!!

As I worked, it reminded me of my Great Aunt Fran, classy and beautiful. That description could also hold true for my Mother, which is why I’m beyond happy that this piece is going to her! Hope you enjoy it, Mom! :)))

Chic Antique – A Side Table Refinish in Teal & White

IMG_2582Hello there! I am so happy to share this recent refinish with you! This 1930’s Brandt side table was a wreck when I found it, but after a little tlc she is beautiful once more! For the look of this piece I had a past client’s future nursery in mind & I think it turned out perfectly as a chic side table! To get this look, I started by sanding the wood top and finishing with satin lacquer. I then painted the whole piece in a custom teal I mixed up. I taped off the edge detail along with a square on the shelf, painting that area a lovely white to offset the aqua. After the paint dried I distressed and added Briwax clear wax to give the whole piece a soft glow. My process might take a long time and be labor intensive, but if the end result is as pretty as this then it’s all worth it! Check out my work!

I really hope this piece finds a loving home! :)))

Thrift Store Table Transformation

I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite hobbies is to scour thrift stores for forgotten furniture pieces. Occasionally I’m lucky enough to find a gem in the rough to transform & this happened to be one of those times…

beautybeast

The top was a chipping, dinged up mess and the speckled paint & stain finish was atrocious! That’s probably why I was able to snag it for only $9! I was ecstatic to say the least, well, until I thought of all the work ahead… something I dread and, at the same time, thoroughly enjoy doing… if that makes any sense!

I happily lugged the table home & got to work sanding, staining, and lacquering the top & priming, painting, distressing, and waxing the bottom! With every step I finished it gave me the motivation to continue. Watching furniture come back to life is so rewarding to me… the beautiful end result makes all the splinters, cuts, and cursing worth it!
